MONSTER JAM AND STARCARS AT DODGER STADIUM PREMIER!

Thanks to Charger Steve, Star Car Central Los Angeles and San Diego Chapters  have been part of the attraction at Monster Jam shows for the last four years. Most shows we drive  a parade lap inside the stadiums for the fans as part of the pre-show.  This year we appeared at three Monster Jam shows in San Diego, Anaheim Stadium and a first time ever at Dodger stadium with different members of the famous television and motion picture car group at each event.

Back in black! Bandit, KITT and the A-team van! I Pity the fool who don't like black star cars!

In the shadow of the famous Dodger Stadium we eventually lined up our cars, hoping the rain would pass over us and we could drive the infield of Dodger stadium!

Our first stop of the day was to gather in the nearby police academy parking lot, not just because it was close and a big open area to gather but also because it was a movie and TV location used many times. Most notably in the opening sequence of “Charlie’s Angels”

So in another instance of “Cross geeking” (tm nate truman 2003) Here’s a shot of Paul’s Back to the Future delorean under the Academy arch!

"1976 pilot shoot of Charlie's Angels! Where's Farrah?"

So we all parked in the historic lot until everyone arrived!

Then we all drove around the stadium, stopping to admire a few closed gates and lined up for the driver’s area display.

'NEW JURASSIC PARK EXPLORER! LOU, WATCH OUT! IT'S BIGGER THAN IT APPEARS IN YOUR SIDE MIRRORS!

We also welcomed Scott with his Jurassic park Explorer for the first time! Everyone agreed he was an easy addition to the SCC team!   Lou was a trooper and came all the way to the event, and after a call from his wife and a look up at the sky made a wise decision and went home! Little did we know what was in store for us!

Charger Steve led us in and lined us up, then lined us up again, then finally got us where he wanted us!

"Rain? What rain?"

Lou was the first to leave of the 15 cars that made it to the stadium. We lost about three cars in the days leading up to the show, and another three before the main event started! It was going to be 20 cars! Darn Rain!

Magnum P.I. Ferrari and Back to the Future Delorean, with Knight Rider bookends!

Jenn’s SPM Kitt lead the display, Paul’s Delorean, Oscar’s Magnum P.I. 308 GTSi Ferrari followed by Alex’s KITT at the start of the row of movie and TV cars. Before the big show started, Oscar and Alex had headed for cover with their cars due to leaks! Thanks for staying for the fans as long as you did!

Herbie the Love bug, Star wars, and James Bond?

Obishawn and Yoda made a mad dash for cover, but Cliff and Justice in their Nascar Herbie and Brian in his James Bond BMW stayed for the show!  (We did have a nice tent city to keep us dry during the worst of it thanks to Mater Mike!)

Next up was the Blues Brothers 2000 police car, and Tony’s perfect Smokey and the Bandit trans am! He even had the T-Tops off for a while!  Tony’s bandit is spot on, even down to the Coors boxes!

This was the first SCC event for Scott and his dad Norm with their Jurassic park Explorer.  We have to get Ari and his Jurassic park jeep together at a future event!

What's that Orange car next to the A-Team van? It should have a sign.

Down at the far end of the display was Jon’s Bumblebee, some orange car Steve brought ( he’s working on a sign so people know what show it’s from. It was a spin off from Smokey and the bandit I think…) and the A-Team van!

Charger Steve's General Lee, and Mr. T's A-team van! (Mr. Truman, that is!)

Due to the rain, most of the owners and drivers of the Star CarCentral.com cars stayed under cover and enjoyed great food and stories in a near by tent city, but the crowds still flocked to the cars to see their favorite movie and TV cars!

Not even pouring rain could keep the fans away from the famous cars!

Towmater and the A-Team, and some contructobot transformers at Starcarcentral.com HQ!

Bringing up the other end of the display was Mike’s Towmater tribute tow truck and Nate’s A-Team van!  Those darn constructobots always are photobombing . They act more like decepticons than Autobots!

Even though the rain thinned the group throughout the day, hats off to all who came! Otherwise we would never have this cool shot of the rain storm with starcars at dodger stadium!

Next up, KITT turboboosts into the Knight Rider repair truck, and Back to the Future has a run in on the freeway on the way home….

Can you design the next batmobile urban assault vehicle?

Here’s a challenge for all the builders that want a chance to design something along the lines of a functional batmobile, or futuristic version of today’s HUMMER.

If you ever wanted to design a super car loaded with as many weapons and tools as you could imagine (think your own personal Batmobile), now is finally your chance. Not only do you get an opportunity to design the craziest vehicle you can dream up and see it built in real life, but you can also win up to $7,500 in prize money from the Pentagon’s research branch, DARPA.

There are a few simple rules that you do have to keep in mind though:

  • The vehicle has to use “tubular steel chassis with existing GM LS3 V8 powertrain,” which is the steel frame pictured below.
  • Has to carry up to five passengers, including up to three people lying down.
  • It’s got to carry up to 1,200 lbs and tow up to 4,000 lbs

As long as you follow the three rules above, you can get as creative as you want with your design. Thinking of stealing some ideas from the Transformers movie? How about jet propulsion and speedboat ability? Go for it. DARPA is open to all suggestions. Submissions are to be in before March 3, 2011.

I have a chassy ready to go, but I don’t think it will seat 5 people even if they are lying down!

Rockford Files car on display in South Dakota!

Museum’s Screen Used Rockford Files Firebird

Nelson Garage’s Rockford Files Firebird

Written by Jim Suva

NelsonFirebird1

Nelson’s Garage is a museum located at 629 Main Street, Deadwood, South Dakota. This museum is on the main floor of the Celebrity Casino Hotel.  Nelson’s Garage is owned by brothers Don and Robert Nelson.  In November 2003, Don Nelson informed me that they were putting a screen-used Rockford Files Firebird on display in their museum.

This Firebird is a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Formula. It has a 350 cubic inch engine with a 4 barrel carburetor, automatic transmission, AM/FM radio, power steering, power brakes, power windows and air conditioning.

The Firebird was purchased through a prop house that has a relationship with Cinema Vehicle Services. According to Robert Nelson the Firebird has patched holes in the trunk lid and fenders. These holes were filled in after the standard rear spoiler was removed. This car also has two letters of authenticity from Cinema Vehicle Services. One letter states that this car was used in the filming of the “Rockford Files”, the second states that the car was used in the television shows “Rockford Files” starring James Garner. Both letters contain the VIN number of the Firebird and are signed by the President of Cinema Vehicle Services.

The Firebird has been on displayed for a number of years now. Robert said, “People who appreciate and know the car best are typically the people who used to watch the TV series. They love the car!” In fact, a lot of people who visit their property are retired, and that is why they felt the car would be such a good fit.

The Rockford car has been well taken care of. It is rotated with other cars on display and is serviced regularly. When the car is not on display, it is serviced and stored in a heated warehouse. I believe this one of the last Firebirds that James Garner drove as Jim Rockford. This is a nice piece of TV history and it is in very good condition.

Original Screen Used Rockford File’s Truck

Original Screen Used Rockford File’s Truck

written by Jim Suva

I had the pleasure to talk with Robert, who lives in Florida. Robert is my age and is another dedicated Rockford Files fan. Robert is the proud owner of an original screen-used Rockford Files pickup truck. During the last season of The Rockford Files, James Garner appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Jim told Johnny that this was going to be the last season for the TV series. Upon hearing that, Robert asked his wife to write a letter to NBC telling them that he wanted to buy Rocky’s pickup truck. Some time passed and Robert asked his wife if she ever received an answer. She hadn’t. So he asked her write another letter. This time, Mary Ann Rhea, Jim’s personal assistant called Robert. She said they lost the original letter while moving their office, but they had Rocky’s truck if he was still interested in purchasing it. Needless to say Robert and his wife flew to Los Angeles in May 1980. They were picked up at the airport by a man named Chuck … in Rocky’s pickup truck! Chuck worked for the Vista Group, the organization that helped supply the vehicles to the TV series. They were driven to the body shop where the truck was originally painted, and had a scratch touched up as they waited. Robert heard that the owner of the body shop wanted to buy all the Firebirds and trucks from The Rockford Files, but could not afford to buy them all. That is why Robert could buy this truck. After the scratch was repaired, they were driven to a nearby community called Toluca Lake, where James Garner’s new office was located. The office was right across the street from Bob Hope’s home. Once at Mr. Garner’s office they saw that he had a 1980 Trans Am and one of the Rockford Firebirds there. Robert and his wife met and talked with Mr. Garner for over two hours. He told them all about the pickup and how everything worked. He even autographed two posters for them, which featured the vehicles from The Rockford Files. Robert said Mr. Garner was just like a regular guy. Robert and his wife stayed a few days in Los Angeles. Mr. Garner got Lakers tickets for them, and they also drove out to Paradise Cove to check out the Sandcastle Restaurant. Robert then drove his prize pickup back home to Florida. This particular pickup truck is a 1979 GMC 4X4 Sierra ½ ton. It has a 400 cubic inch engine with a four-barrel carburetor. It also boasts full-time four-wheel drive with a turbo 400 transmission. Each wheel has two shock absorbers. It still has all the Vic Hickey Enterprise equipment, such as two additional gas tanks, winch, steering wheel, roll bar and fog lights. The pickup also has two original GM gas tanks that came with the truck from the factory. Robert remembers that the GMC trucks originally came only in silver, and with basic equipment. The Vic Hickey equipment and the maroon paint were added at a local body shop. The maroon color is actually a 1976 GM color called Rosedale Red with orange pinstripes. The pinstripes are about 1/8 inch in width. The rear of truck has the names Jim & Jerry written on it in pin striping. According to Robert, his truck can be seen in two episodes, “The Big Cheese” and “Paradise Cove.” Robert’s truck has Vic Hickey center hubs on the front wheels and the standard GM center hubs on the rear wheels. BigCheeseRFT2 Robert has not driven his truck much over the years. It only has 11,910 miles on it. He currently has the truck in his garage under a tarp. It is in need of restoration. His dream is to restore Rocky’s pickup truck and show it to James Garner in person!

Batmobile History through the years!

Thanks to BATMOBILEHISTORY.COM

My netpal Bill has done a great service to all the batfans, he has documented and collected everything ever built or called a “Batmobile” in the comics, movies and TV and put them in order!   I want to thank Bill so below is his home page write up of his quest! Years ago Bill  gave me credit years ago for some info on the 66 batmobile and I managed to send him a few batmobiles he didn’t know about yet, I don’t think that’s possible now!!  So if you think you can send him something he DOESN’T know about the batmobile, check out his site or read his write up below about why he did it!

Batman first appeared in May of 1939 in Detective Comics #27, and although the first true Batmobile did not appear for another two years, it has become one of the Dark Knight’s best known weapons.

The Batmobile made its career debut in Batman #5, then appeared on a comic cover for the first time for Batman #20. Because of different artists’ interpretations of what the car should be, it changed size, shape, and features frequently. Later, as the car was marketed beyond the comics, more forms appeared based on practical or aesthetic considerations. In the 1960s, the first full size, fully operational Batmobile was built for the TV show Batman, and had to face financial and functional questions. A few years later the design of this car would be modified for use in the Superfriends cartoon series, with the unique considerations of making a car that could be easily drawn repeatedly for animation. Then, nearly three decades after the TV series, Batman returned to live action with Warner Brothers Batman movies. At about the same time, Batman: The Animated series came out, with a whole new take on the design of Batman and his universe. All of this was on top of the natural evolution of the car over 60+ years, taking into account new technological features like the jet engine and the computer.

I started collecting data on the Batmobiles a few years ago while trying to research a model project I was working on (you can visit my scale model site here). I discovered that there were very few reference guides to the Batmobile, and none of them covered the complete history of the car. Many focused only on a single generation (such as the Futura Batmobile), or they covered a particular genre (TV, cartoons, movies, etc.). As I collected information from all of these sources, I decided to put together my own history of the Batmobile.

Before I started this project, I had no idea how convoluted the history of the Batmobile could be. Over the last decade I have learned more about the car, the creators behind it, and Batman in general than I ever expected. Still, there’s a lot that I haven’t learned yet. If you know of anything that belongs here, or if you have any information on an existing entry, send me an e-mail at spencer1984@yahoo.com.”

You can also send any cool Batmobile art or designs to me at info@starcarcentral.com

Green Hornet Black Beauty clone almost ready to Fight Crime!

There are a small number of Green Hornet fans around the world who decided to take their fan energies and replicate the TV shows crimefighting car, a 1966 Chrysler Imperial dubbed “The Black Beauty” that Kato and Britt Reid used to take out the bad guys in the short lived series.

One of the two original cars built for the show sits in a Museum in Los Angeles, the other is in private hands so if you want one, you have to build your own.

With the release of the new movie, the Green Hornet is once again in the limelight.  Most fans know that Bruce Lee played Kato on TV, but the Green Hornet reached fame originally on the radio.  That was followed  by a series of movie serials, and then after a long break the TV show was made by the same producers who made the 60’s hit BATMAN show starring Adam West and Burt Ward.

StarCarCentral has been waiting a few years as this clone has been pieced together.  The first parts that kicked off the project were a set of fiberglass pieces that I was afraid were about to be lost for good down in San Diego.   This was a few years back, and I only knew one Green Hornet fan, my big brother!

He has had a long road buying two imperials, selling one off to the new feature film, mechanical and financial disasters, but he has persevered!

Still lots to do, next up is the roof need covering, wheels swapped out. Then lots and lots of interior wiring and details that most people will never notice but when it comes to starcars, it’s all in the details!  The back seat will have  a small closet for the hornet costume and extras like gas guns, and of course lots of rockets and guns!  We are looking forward to seeing Mark’s Beauty on the Star car circuit in 2011!

2010 Camarillo Christmas Parade brings out the STAR cars!

You may have seen a police car in your rear view mirror at some point, but I think this is the first time Herbie the Love bug has almost been pulled over by Starsky and Hutch!

Once again Nate Truman’s StarCarCentral.com gang gathered to participate in the Camarillo Christmas parade! We were almost rained out last time, but this time it was practically a trouble free event!

We all lined up in the morning and most everyone found the starting line, Alex and Oscar decided to go to the end of the parade first! Eventually we were all in place ready to start the parade! Sue even came with out her Get Smart Sunbeam to support the SCC! She got to ride in Bumblebee for her efforts!

Alex and Oscar finally found the right end of the parade, and all was fine, until we started up the cars to get moving down the street!  I looked back and saw Lou’s hood of his Starsky and Hutch Torino up, and Alex getting out some jumper cables!

Is Kitt Jumping Starsky and Hutch, or the other way around?

Another first for the day, we have all had to get a jump to start a car at some point, but have you ever seen KITT from Knight Rider and the Torino from Starsky and Hutch helping each other out?

I assumed Lou’s car needed a jump, I went back to check and heard it running, so ran back to my A-Team van as the parade was moving!

With Lou’s car up and running, Jason kept snapping photos, and found a few Cheerleaders who wanted a shot with John’s Bumblebee Camaro!  I think Bumblebee is smiling!

StarCars, Let's ROLL! Alex? ALEX?!?!

So we got the signal to start rolling, and we all start moving out, except Alex in his KITT from Knight Rider!  What? He never, NEVER breaks down.  Alex is always over prepared!  Should we leave KITT and take Alex? Leave Alex behind? Where’s Devon and Bonnie and the big Knight Rider Truck when you need them?

STARCARCENTRAL.COM ROLL OUT!

So the parade moves out, and so do we! Luckily the parade wasn’t moving too fast!  We inched forward, and while we waited to join the main parade, Alex had a talk with KITT and convinced him it would be good to start at this time.  KITT agreed, and joined the line up at the last minute!

Starsky and Hutch being followed by the A-Team?

Everyone lined up based on the age of the show they were from, oldest to newest!

"I love it when a VAN comes together!"

Herbie led the group today,  as the theme was “Christmas through the Decades”!  Even though The Love Bug has been in movies and TV shows spanning 50 years, the first movie  was from the 60’s so Jason was up first!

Herbie Rocks!

We could have had the Batmobile for the 60’s too, but I needed more seats for my kids “aka” Banner holders- so I brought my A-Team van instead!  The 70’s was all Starsky and Hutch,

No ticket for Herbie today! It's Lou!

and the 80’s were represented by The A-Team van, KITT, and Magnum P.I.

Is that Tom Selleck taking a photo of a guy taking a photo?

And bringing up the 2000’s was Bumble Bee from the Transformer movies!

As each car drives by, its fun to watch the faces light up as they recognize some old friends!  Each car has its fans, some people get it wrong (pointing at KITT) “It’s the Batcar!”  and the littlest kids stare blankly at all of us, then point to the end and scream “BUMBLEBEE!  Mom’s it’s bumblebee!”

Magnum P.I. and the A-Team working together? "I pity the fool they are after!"

It’s always fun to bring smiles to fans of our cars and it’s also fun to get together afterward and swap stories too!  A fun Christmas get together at a secret location where another starcar lies in wait to rise from the ashes, and a trip to see the long awaited Black Beauty near by topped off a fun star car day!

Next up, The BLACK BEAUTY!

Bonus MERRY CHRISTMAS PHOTO! WHERE’S JERRY BEEN LATELY?

HE’S BEEN HANGING WITH A DIFFERENT SHORTER CROWD FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

"HO, HO, HO? SANTA IS A SCC MEMBER!"

“THE CAR” rises from the dead again!

In 1977 Universal Pictures released “THE CAR” which starred a possessed  modified  1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III.  James Brolin was also in it. 🙂

“WWED” What Would EVIL Drive? THE CAR!

In the shadow of “JAWS” this movie was “Jaws with a car” and at the end of the movie, both original modified Lincolns were totaled.  One by rolling, the other was set on fire and shot over a high cliff to it’s doom.  But you can’t keep an evil car down!

So for several years, one fan has been working to resurrect the evil Lincoln, and he’s done it!

Making a full scale replica in steel is nearing completion!

Now all that’s left to do is find a devil worshiping group to curse the car, and it’s ready to go!

The 2 originals were built by Barris Customs for the movie, and above, George finally got reunited with this new SON of THE CAR!   If you want a CAR of your own, thanks to a SCC honorary member – you can get a fiberglass one for your very own! You just have to sell your soul!  And honk 4 times!

Hey, maybe this car was born from the original CAR and another famous TV car?  They say girls like the bad boys! My Mother the car starred Jerry Van Dyke and one of the first cars that was the star of a show!

There are at least two  “1928 Porters” out there, anyone know where we can find the screen used  “Mother”?

At last report, there was a 1928 Porter in Alberta Canada in a private collection, and one in a museum in Tennessee, but we want one that will tour with us in Southern California!

The 1928 Porter was an actual car, made from the parts of other cars from other makers! So if you do your research, you could in theory, put one together from parts of other old cars.

Starcar Trivia: The final death of THE CAR footage, was used to double for KITT in an episode of  Knight Rider shooting off a cliff!  watch it all or go to about 3:10 in to see the shot!

Extra Credit starcarcentral.com points for finding 2 other famous tv cars in the photos above!

StarCarCentral.com lines up famous movie and tv cars for downs syndrome event for DSALA

Each year the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles puts on a Buddy Walk and Festival, and Nate Truman’s StarCarCentral.com line up was there to support the cause!  Only one thing was missing, me! AKA NATE!  Luckily,  the SSC is not about one person, it’s about a team of great star car owners who will come out with their cool famous movie and tv cars to support charities around Los Angeles!

KITT from Knight RiderMagnum P.I. Ferrari, Back to the Future Delorean, Ratchet  right next to Bumblebee from the Transformers, and Herbie all showed up to support all the folks at DSALA!

SCC members Alex, Oscar, Paul, Jason, Jon and Brian all arrived early and lined up somehow with out their fearless leader!?!?  How is that possible?  Oh right, they are all veterans of many similar events we have done over the last seven years!

Of course, this was the first time a mini Thunderbird Jet showed up, and gave rides!   I think all the guys wanted a turn!  I bet  a jet plane would give the horses at Santa Anita a run for their money!

But wait, I know what you are thinking, if Nate Truman’s not there, then there was no Batmobile!  HA!

Even though he won an Academy Award my secret weapon comes out a few times a year, with HIS batmobile!  Tom Woodruff came later but the boys saved a place for him right in front!

After the walk and festival ended, a once in a lifetime photo op happened!  All the guys went out to a local Sonic and managed to get every stall on the same side, for one of the coolest starcar photos in a long time!  That’s what I get for missing an event!

Now we have to turn that into a poster!  Too cool!   Next up, the next day, AUTISM Walk at Anaheim stadium!  Still no NATE!

If you want to attend or support DSLA next year, just check out their website at DSLA
